7 Tips for good oral health

The seven quick tips below will hopefully ensure your mouth is always in good condition:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Whilst brushing your teeth, make sure that you clean all the surfaces of each tooth. More information can be found in our post on brushing your teeth. If possible, avoid brushing your teeth straight after eating although ideally you should wait for at least an hour after eating.
  2. Flossing once a day, usually after brushing, can be very beneficial and will help to ensure that plaque and food debris between teeth are removed.
  3. Use a suitable toothpaste. Different people will have differing toothpaste requirements; there are toothpastes for people who suffer from sensitive teeth and toothpastes designed specifically for children. For more information on toothpastes you can read our post on them.
  4. Use a quality and suitable mouthwash. A mouthwash will reduce bacteria activity in your mouth and additionally keep your breath smelling fresh. Alcohol free mouthwashes are also available if regular ones cause unwanted side effects.
  5. Eat a healthy well balanced diet with at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and ensure that you have enough fibre in your diet. Whilst it is best to eat a well-rounded diet, try to cut back on the intake of sugary foods and drinks which may cause tooth decay. Carbonated drinks are also damaging to enamel.
  6. Drink at least 6 glasses of water spread throughout the day. Regularly drinking water carries many benefits not just to do with your teeth. It can help to improve concentration and energy levels.
  7. Make frequent visits to your dentist. This is possibly the most important of all these tips as your dentist can provide you with advice specific to you on how to have good oral hygiene practices.
